First Spouse Gold Coin Auctions
In the year 2007, the U.S. Mint decided to mint and to offer to the public the First Spouse gold coins, featuring the faces and themes from the lives of the First Spouses of past American Presidents. In the beginning, the U.S. Mint wanted to release the gold coins in sets.
Each of the First Spouse gold coin sets would contain four coins each - at a whopping one thousand six hundred dollars per set. The original plan however was abandoned for a kinder, more affordable scheme for the general public.
The set of four (one from each type released) was abandoned in favor of separate coins sold, housed in wooden boxes. The price tag decreased significantly - the twenty four karat coins were now at the four hundred dollar range, which brought absolute madness to coin collectors everywhere.
The total number available to the public to date has reached 16, (as this article is written)
