In 1792, America as a sovereign nation started to issue its own coins. Before, various coins were manufactured mainly in England and shipped to the United States. For instance, in 1773, coins for Virginia were made and distributed to that colony.
The currency in circulation at the time includes a mix of coins, tokens, counterfeits, and medals, which were used in everyday business transactions. In the 1790s, there were several issues relating to George Washington. In 1792, there were Pattern Coins, and in the succeeding years, America issued copper coins, silver coins, and gold coins. These are collectively called colonial coins--issued by private and official mints inside and outside America.
