The new series of circulating dollar coins (the Presidential Dollar) began in 2007, honoring James Madison, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. There are 4 different coins issued each year featuring former presidents.
The Presidential Dollar Act
Under The Presidential $1 Coin Act, the series was authorized, which provides for the issuance of circulating dollar coins to honor the Presidents of the United States. The design revitalization of new series of United States coinage is highly sought and this circulation is meant to return its glory as an aesthetically pleasing object.
Several measures were taken by the Act to ensure sufficient coins supply are available for circulation. Various activities and programs were held by The Director of the US Mint to create awareness among public of the new coins.
The Presidential Dollar series designs
The obverse side bears the President's name being honored with inscriptions indicating the years of the term of office and the order number of the President served.
The reverse of the coins portrays the inscription "United States of America", the Statue of Liberty and the inscription "$1". Inscription along the edge of the coin bears the mint mark, the legends E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust, 13 stars and the year of minting or issuance of the coin. The absence of legend "Liberty" is because the image of the Statue of Liberty (reverse) was adequate to convey the message of liberty.
The Presidential Dollar series Release
The President Washington $1 Coin was first released to the public on February 15, 2007, in honor of Presidents' Day, which was observed on February 19. If a President served in more than 2 consecutive terms, there will only be one coin issued. If a President served in 2 non-consecutive periods of service, a presidential coin will then be issued for each period. It's worth to mention that the Presidential Dollars series is only limited to deceased Presidents.
