Anna Harrison was the wife of the 9th United States President, William Henry Harrison. She was born on July 25th, 1775 in New Jersey to a family from Long Island. Anna Harrison was an educated woman during her era. Education was highly important to her father who was a New Jersey’s Supreme Court Chief of Justice. Anna Harrison was the first First Spouse to have a formal education documented who also an avid reader of newspapers and journals on politics.
Anna Harrison First Spouse Gold Coin
When William Henry Harrison was appointed the United States 9th President in 1841, Anna Harrison did not travel to Washington to take her husband’s side as the 9th First Spouse as she had to stay at home recuperating from her illness. Exactly a month after her husband’s election to be the President did Anna Harrison finally ready to move to Washington but her plan ended before it began when she received the news of her husband’s death. The journey to the White House was never made.
The Anna Harrison First Spouse Gold Coins were the first series of the First Spouse program of the year 2009 by the U.S. Mint. The obverse side of the coin was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted with Anna Harrison portrait by sculptor Joseph Menna. The inscriptions on the obverse include the name “Anna Harrison”, the “In God We Trust”, “9th” as the Presidency order, “Liberty”, and the Presidential term year “1941”, as well as the mintage year”2009”.
The reverse side of the coins were designed with the perfect centre to portray Anna Harrison’s love for her ten children and education. The reveres of the coins portray Anna Harrison educating her children by herself by reading them a book. Further inscriptions on the coins’ reverse were the “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, gold content “1/2 oz”, “$10” denomination of the coins and the “.9999 Fine Gold” purity of the gold coins. Thomas Cleveland was entrusted with the design and Charles Vickers with the sculpting.
The Anna Harrison first Spouse Gold Coins were circulated in both proof and uncirculated versions. The coins sales ended on March 18th, 2010, after the sales of 6,250 proofs and 3,537 uncirculated coins versions. Both coins were initially priced at $629.00 and $614.00 respectively but later adjusted as the gold price changes.
