The Grand Canyon National Park Quarter coin is the fourth release of the American Beautiful Quarters Program that was officially launched on September 21, 2010. The program is a multi-year program that is set to run for more than 10 years starting from 2010 and ending in year 2021. The Grand Canyon National Park Quarter was made to commemorate the Grand Canyon National that has been one of the mainstays in the United States economy boom in its tourism industry. The Grand Canyon was recorded to receive almost 1.5 million visitors every year from tourists from all over the world.
The National Park, being one of the oldest national parks ever existed in the United States, has been the most famous natural wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon is also famous for its off road trails for hikers as it has many accessible places via the rugged and remote roads. The National Park was finally declared as a national monument in January 1908 and then became a designated national park in February 1919.
The American Beautiful Quarter Program was initiated by the United States Mint and although the series will be running from 2010 to 2021, Timothy Geithner who is the Secretary of Treasury have announced that there may be an extension to the program to be ended in year 2033 if the program proved to be successful among the avid coin collectors in the United States and all over the world.
The Grand Canyon National Park Quarter reverse design was chosen by Timothy Geithner after four design proposals were created by the US Mint designers. The selected reverse design portrayed the scene of the Nankoweep Delta, situated in Marble Canyon designed by Phebe Hemphill. The location is very near to the Colorado River in the northern section of the Grand Canyon. Other engravings on the reverse side are the inscription of “Grand Canyon”, “Arizona”, “2010” as the mintage year, and the “E Pluribus Unum”.
The obverse side of the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter on the other hand has the portrait of President George Washington, a designed first used on the 1932 Washington Quarter. The portrait in the coin’s obverse side was created by John Flanagan which also includes the inscriptions of “United States of America”. “In God We Trust”, “Liberty” and the face value of “Quarter Dollar”.
The selling price of 100-bags of the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter coin is $35.95. The coin’s tags are attached to each bag that has the indicator of the origin mint of either Philadelphia or Denver, the mint mark, national park’s name and its state abbreviation. In this case, the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter has the abbreviation of “AZ”. The coin rolls, however, is priced at $32.95 each that contains 40 coins for each roll, exclusively packed in a special wrapping pack that shows the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter’s face value, mint mark, state abbreviation and its mint mark.
