Martin Van Buren, the 8th United States President was born on December 5th 1782. He was the first United States President who was not of British or Irish descent as he came from a Dutch family. Despite that, he was the first President of the United States to be born as an American Citizen compared to his predecessors who were of British-Irish descent. During his early days before serving as the United States President, Martin Van Buren served as President Andrew Jackson’s Secretary of State and was then promoted to Vice President.
Serving in the office without a spouse, the Martin Van Buren Liberty Gold Coins were the eighth instalment of the First Spouse Gold Coins series, and was one of the few Presidents who had to be represented by Lady Liberty for the pairing of the Presidential $1 in accordance with the Coin Act of 2005. His wife Hannah Van Buren, passed on in 1819 and Martin Van Buren was widowed for 18 years before stamping his Presidential mark in 1837. The Martin Van Buren Liberty Gold Coins were first circulated to the public on November 25th, 2008 by the United States Mint.
The image of Liberty Seated Dime on the obverse was chosen to be on the coins series as it was originally designed in Martin Van Buren’s Presidential era. The other inscriptions on the obverse side include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust – 2008”, “8th Presidency”, “1837-1841” as the year of his Presidential term and the mintage marking “W”.
The reverse design features the younger looking Martin Van Buren, sitting peacefully under a tree reading a book with the background of a tavern owned by his family in New York. The image was designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Other inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “$10” representing the face value, “1/2 oz” gold content, and the “.9999 Fine Gold” that indicates it purity.
This gold coin series was sold at $549.95 for the proof version and $524.95 for the uncirculated version. With a new pricing policy adopted by the US Mint, it was adjusted numerous times in response to the price of gold worldwide. The Martin Van Buren was pulled off from circulation in December 3rd 2009 with quite a disappointing sales figure, combining less than 12,000 sales after circulation.
