Proof coins are manufactured by striking specialized planchets at least twice by using polished dyes. This procedure results to a coin which has frosted details and highly mirrored surface. Generally, these coins are minted for, and sold to avid coin collectors. These proof coins were from ‘proof sets’ which usually came in a square box.
The 1954 Proof Set has tissue-covered cellophane holders that individually hold the proof coins. In 1955, the proof sets with cellophane holders were wrapped in a brown envelope. From 1965-1957, Special Mint Sets (40% silver) were minted as a substitute for proof sets. The 1965 set was in a white envelope (unsealed), the other sets minted in 1968 onwards were in boxes with plastic holders.
