Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Coins

The Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Coins were created first and foremost to commemorate more than 3.5 million of the Boy Scouts of America members in conjunction of the organization’s centennial anniversary in February 2010. The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act was officially signed on October 8, 2008, which the minting and issuing of the commemorative silver dollar coins are made by the United States Mint, as authorized by the Secretary of Treasury. The Boy Scouts of America’s organization has attracted 111,000,000 youth members since their early existence in 1910.

The Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Coins were officially put on sale on March 23, 2010, at the United States Mint at exactly 12:00 noon ET. The coins were released in two versions which are the proof and the uncirculated qualities. The coins were struck from a 90% silver and 10% copper with a face value of one dollar. The coins were only struck 350,000 pieces although the signs of high demand were indicated. Furthermore, the sale of the Boy Scout Silver Dollar Coins includes surcharges that will be paid to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation.

The design on the Boy Scout Silver Dollar Coins is different from the other commemorative coins as the design represents the single Boy Scouting Organization. The image sculpted on the obverse side portrays three youths in full uniform giving the Boy Scout salute. Each of the youth has different roles where one is a Cub Scout, the female scout represents a Venturer and the third youth represents a Boy Scout. Other that the sculptor, the side is also engraved with inscriptions of “Continuing The Journey”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty” and “1910-2010” depicting the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Celebration.

The reverse design on the other hand shows the universal emblem of the Boy Scouts of America with the inscriptions of “United States of America”, “Boy Scouts of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “One Dollar” as the face value of the coin as well as their motto “Be Prepared”. The reverse side was engraved by Jim Licaretz, one of the United States Mint Sculptor-Engravers. Whereas the obverse design was created by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles Vickers, also a United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver.

The Boy Scout Silver Dollar Coins have a diameter of 1.5 inches and weighing about 26.730 grams nominal. The proof versions are initially priced at $39.95 and the uncirculated versions initial selling price was at $33.95. After April 21, 2010, the introductory price will no longer be used and a regular price was set at $43.95 and $35.95 for the proof and uncirculated coins respectively. The United States Mint also imposed a limit of 100 coins for each version per household.
