Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin

June 3, 2010 marked the day of the continuation of the First Spouse Gold Coin with the release of the Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin. Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin represented the fifteenth issue of the overall series. Jane Pierce was First Lady from 1853-1857 and was the wife of President Franklin Pierce.

Previously, First Spouse Gold Coins program was in the extended period of lackluster sales but it seemed to gain its momentum from collectors' renewed interest. This positive trend is most likely due to the increased gold market price, which put more highlight on gold coins. On top of that, the reduced maximum mintages set for this year may also be a contributing factor to the encouraging response.

The Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin which was sculpted by Don Everhart and was designed by Donna Weaver, portrays her portrait on the obverse. Inscriptions on the obverse include the order of the Presidency "14th", her name her name "Jane Pierce", the motto "In God We Trust", the years spent as First Spouse "1853-1857", the date of issue and mint mark and "Liberty".

The reverse of the Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Coin which was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles Vickers, portrays a scene of her seated in the visitor’s gallery of the U.S. Capitol Building. The inscriptions (on the reverse) encircling the scene read "E Pluribus Unum", "United States of America", "1/2 oz. .999 Fine Gold" and "$10".

Before the design is finalized, United States Mint has alternate reverse designs which included a scene of Jane Pierce reading on White House grounds and a scene during a thunder storm where both Jane Pierces and Franklin Pierce met in college.

The current series of First Spouse Gold Coins (Jane Pierce) are available in proof and uncirculated versions and were priced at $779 and $766 respectively. The coins will be available for sale for for approximately 1 year or until the maximum authorized mintage of 15 000 has been reached. By December 2010, more than 7000 sales had been recorded.
