The First Spouse Gold Coins Program’s thirteenth release by the United States Mint was of the Margaret Taylor’s series. The series were the final release of 2009 when they were made available on December 3rd 2009. Margaret Taylor was born Margaret Mackall Smith on September 21st, 1788, and was wife of the 12th United States President, Zachary Taylor, whom she married on June 21st, 1810.
Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coin
Margaret Taylor’s married life to Zachary Taylor was full of prayers for her husband, who was then a Lieutenant, serving for the country in numerous wars including the Seminole War. Margaret lived a nomad life following her husband during his service as a United States Army. Her life was devoted to caring and tending to injured soldiers as well as giving motivation to young soldiers’ wives waiting for their husband to return safely from the war.
The Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins obverse side was designed by Phebe Hemphill. The image of Margaret Taylor on the side was sculpted by Charles Vickers. The side include inscriptions of “Margaret Taylor”. “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “12th” as the order of Presidency, President Zachary Taylor’s term ‘1849-1850” and the mintage year “2009 W”.
The reverse side of the coins were designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and the image portraying Margaret Taylor tending to an injured soldier was sculpted by Jim Licaretz. The other inscriptions designed on the side include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “$10” face value of the coins, “ gold purity “.9999 Fine Gold”, and “1/2 oz” of gold content in each of the coins.
The Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins were made available in both proof and uncirculated versions priced at $754 and $741 respectively. The prices are subjected to weekly adjustments as the US Mint is selling them at the average gold price. The combined sales of both coins versions were recorded at 6,084 coins up until May 2010.
