On the obverse of Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coin features the portrait of Mary Todd which was sculpted and designed by Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions at the obverse features the order of the Presidency "16th", the name of the First Spouse "Mary Todd Lincoln", "In God We Trust", years as First Lady "1861-1865", the date of mint mark and date issue and finally the word "Liberty".
The reverse of Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coin which was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill and was designed by Joel Iskowitz, portrays a scene of the First Lady bringing flowers and books to wounded Union soldiers. Inscriptions encircling the scene read "United States of America", "$10", "1/2 oz. .999 Fine Gold" and "E Pluribus Unum".
United States Mint has also several alternate designs including a scene of her bandaging a wounded soldier and a scene of Mrs. Lincoln and the President greeting visitors at a public reception. The scene where she bandaged a soldier was almost chosen for the reverse design but due to historical accuracy raised by a member of committee, the design was not selected.
Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coin sales will continue for approximately 1 year or until the maximum mintage has been sold, which ever comes first.
