Augustus Saint-Gaudens rose to fame as the great designer of the world’s most valuable American coin ever.

In 1888, Augustus was born in Dublin, Ireland. When he was around six months old, his family moved to America. Born of a French father and an Irish mother and now, being raised in New York, Saint-Gaudens had a very rich and very diverse cultural background.

Being attracted to the world of the arts from an early age, Saint-Gaudens started taking art classes at the National Academy of Design and at the Cooper Union. At the same time, he also underwent apprenticeship to a cameo-cutter. He completed this apprenticeship at the tender age of 19. Wit his apprenticeship over, Saint-Gaudens looked for more ways to study art. He then moved to Paris and became a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, more specifically in Francois Jouffroy’s atelier.

Later, around 1870, he left Paris and travel to another great European city, Rome. In Rome, he studied art and architecture. It was also in Rome where he received his first commission as an artist. It was also in Rome where he crossed paths with an American art student by the name of Augusta Homer. He fell in love with her and by 1877, they were married.

In 1876, Saint-Gaudens received his first big break as an artist. He was commissioned to create a monument for Civil War Admiral David Farragut. The monument was to be done in New York’s famed Madison Square. Saint-Gaudens’ friend, Stanford White did the architectural setting of the monument. When Saint-Gaudens unveiled his work to the public in 1881, he was met with tremendous praise and success. Many applauded the naturalism in his work as well as the sincerity and lack of any whiff of pompousness or pretentiousness in his creation. With his triumph in this creation, he was established as a great sculptor.

After the Farragut monument, a string of great monuments followed. Saint-Gaudens did the Standing Lincoln in Chicago, a work still deemed as United States’ best portrait statue. Another famous work is the Robert Gold Shaw Memorial in Boston. This bronze bas-relief took Saint-Gaudens fourteen years to make. And even after the work was debuted to the public, Saint-Gaudens still performed minor revisions.

Aside from sculptures, Saint-Gaudens took great interest in using his relief portraits for medallions. Eventually, this lead Saint-Gaudens to the path of designing coinage. Personally chosen by Theodore Roosevelt to create a new design for American coinage, Saint-Gaudens set on to work on what is now considered the most beautiful American coin ever produced. Saint-Gaudens created a high-relief $20 gold coin. In order to make the coin design suitable for production, the US Mint adapted the design into a flattened-down version. The coin was so intricate that it took the US Mint eleven strikes to get all the details into the coin.

Dubbed as the Gold Double Eagle, Saint-Gaudens’ coin had two version, one was the ‘Saint-Gaudens Arabic Numerals’. The other one is the ‘Saint-Gaudens High Relief Roman Numeral’ for 1907. In a 2002 auction, the 1933 version of the coin sold for $ 7.5 million.

Since it is condition that's so important in determining coin values, let's try to understand something about coin grading.

Proofs – A specially made coin distinguished by sharpness of detail and usually with a brilliant mirrorlike surface. Proof refers to the method of manufacture and is not a grade.The term implies perfect condition unless otherwise noted.

• Gem Proof (PF-65) - Surfaces are brilliant, with no noticeable blemishes or flaws. A few, scattered, barely noticeable marks or hairlines.
• Choice Proof (PF-63) - Surfaces are reflective, with only a few blemishes in secondary focal places. No major flaws.
• Proof (PF-60) - Surfaces may have several contact marks, hairlines, or light rubs. Luster may be dull and eye appeal lacking.

Mint State - The terms Mint State (MS) and Uncirculated (Unc.) are interchangeable and refer to coins showing no trace of wear. Such coins may vary slightly due to minor surface imperfections, as described in the following subdivisions:

• Perfect Uncirculated (MS-70) - Perfect new condition, showing no trace of wear. The finest quality possible, with no evidence of scratches, handling, or contact with other coins. Very few regular-issue coins are ever found in this condition.
• Gem Uncirculated (MS-65) - An above-average uncirculated coin that may be brilliant or lightly toned and that has very few contact marks on the surface or rim.
• Choice Uncirculated (MS-63) - A coin with some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.
• Uncirculated (MS-60) - A coin that has no trace of wear, but which may show a number of contact marks, and whose surface may be spotted or lack some luster.

Choice About Uncirculated (AU-55) - Evidence of friction on high points of design. Most of the mint luster remains.

About Uncirculated (AU-50) - Traces of light wear on many of the high points. At least half of the mint luster is still present.

Choice Extremely Fine (EF-45) - Light overall wear on the highest points. All design details are very sharp. Some of the mint luster is evident.

Extremely Fine (EF-40) - Light wear on the design throughout, but all features are sharp and well defined. Traces of luster may show.

Choice Very Fine (VF-30) - Light, even wear on the surface and highest parts of the design. All lettering and major features are sharp.

Very Fine (VF-20) - Moderate wear on high points of the design. All major details are clear.

Fine (F-12) - Moderate to considerable even wear. The entire design is bold with an ON erall pleasing appearance.

Very Good (VG-8) - Well worn with main features clear and bold, although rather flat.

Good (G-4) Heavily worn, with the design visible but faint in areas. Many details are flat.

About Good (AG-3) - Very heavily worn with portions of the lettering, date, and leg¬end worn smooth. The date may be barely readable.

Important: Undamaged coins are worth more than bent, corroded, scratched, holed, nicked, stained or mutilated ones. Flawless Uncirculated coins are generally worth more than values quoted in this book. Slightly worn coins ("sliders") that have been cleaned and conditioned ("whizzed") to simulate Uncirculated luster are worth considerably less than perfect pieces.

Unlike damage inflicted after striking, manufacturing defects do not always lessen values. Examples include colonial coins with planchet flaws or weakly struck designs; early silver and gold coins with weight-adjustment "file marks" (parallel cuts made on the planchet prior to striking) and coins with "lint marks" (surface marks due to the presence of dust or other foreign matter during striking).

Apart from their historical value, some getting museum-grade exhibition quality, they are considered investments that appreciate in value over time. The older it is, the more valuable it becomes. In addition, the more perfect their condition is, the more valuable as well.

Among the countries that have some of the finest minted commemorative coins is the United States. Official commemorative coins are struck by the US Mint office and only the US Congress is empowered to authorize the minting of commemorative coins of the country.

Every US commemorative coin is a legal tender but is not meant for monetary circulation. They are produced in limited quantities and only available to collectors for a short or limited period of time.

Types of Commemorative Coins

Commemorative coins are generally either circulating or legal tender coins of limited monetary duration or special non-circulating ones. Both types celebrate special cultural or historic events and while the former carry its face value, the latter are often priced at a premium well above its face value. Most commemorative coins in Europe and elsewhere have been circulated as legal tender for a limited period of time.

In contrast, US commemorative coins are specially minted coins that have never been circulated to the public as a monetary tender and are sold to collectors at prices well above what’s indicated on the coin itself, or its face value. They were minted, as their coin classification clearly indicates, to commemorate an event, an occasion or a person.

It is not uncommon that these historic coins are specially minted to raise government funds for certain projects. Commemorative coins in the US were minted as a government mechanism for raising money instead of raising new taxes.

Since 1982, when the US Mint resumed issuing commemorative coins, the US government had generated well over $418 million in funds that have helped build and maintain museums, memorial and monuments as well as Olympic sporting initiatives.

It is interesting to note that between 1892 and 1954, the US Congress passed various legislative measures authorizing the U.S. Mint to forge non-circulated commemorative coins celebrating 53 different occasions, memorial events and personages. These resulted in 157 gold and silver non circulating commemorative coins of varying design. They remain some of the most sought-after and prized collectors’ items that have been appreciating in value over the years.

But there have been cases when US commemorative coins have become so popular that the government would mint more and monetize them. This happened with the US Lincoln Cent and the Washington Quarter which were initially meant to have limited circulation of a year. They proved so popular the US Mint continued issuing them beyond the commemoration term.

19th Century US Commemorative Coins

Some of the most valuable US commemorative coins date back to the middle or late 19th century. Most numismatic listings start with the half dollar coin minted in 1892 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World.

But based on official numismatist listings, the first recognized US commemorative coin as authorized by the US Congress were a couple of coins minted and issued in the same year to celebrate the Columbian Exposition. One was a half-dollar or 50-cent bullion silver coin and another was a 25-cent silver coin featuring Queen Isabella of Spain. Each coin was issued with 100 pieces of proof coinages.

But even older than this is the two and a half dollar bullion gold coin stamped "Cal" and minted to celebrate the discovery of gold in the state of California. It was issued in 1848 and many collectors consider this as the country’s first commemorative coin. However, it did not get US Congress nod and was not considered an official release. But it remains one of the most valuable commemorative coins in anyone’s collection.

Early 20th Century US Commemorative Coins

Serious coin collectors can have a field day going through 20th century compendium of commemorative coins in the US as there are many starting with the pure silver Lafayette dollar issued at the turn of the 20th century in 1900. There were more than 36,000 of these coins issued at that time.

Some of the most valuable commemorative coins by today’s market valuation have been minted in the early years of the 20th century. And the simple reason is that they were mostly one-dollar denominated coins struck in pure gold.

The cream of the crop of US commemorative coin is the $50 gold coin issued for the Panama-Pacific exposition in 1915. Its rarity is evident with only 483 coins minted in the standard round shape and 645 coins in octagonal shape. The Panama-Pacific exposition also saw the issuance of a $2.5 gold coin with 6,749 minted, a $1 gold coin with 15,000 issued and a 50-cent coin with 27,134 minted.

After the $1 Lafayette coin issued in 1900, the next important commemorative coin in the $1 denomination was issued for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1903 with 17,375 known mints featuring President Jefferson and an equal number featuring President McKinley. The following couple of years saw commemorative $1 gold coins issued for the Lewis and Clark Exposition – 10,000 coins each for 1903 and 1904.

After the Panama-Pacific Exposition coins, 1916-17 released nearly 10,000 commemorative $1 gold coins for the McKinley Memorial and another 10,000 minted the following year. This has been popularly known as the McKinley Memorial Dollar. In 1922, the government issued 5,000 Grant Memorial coins and another 5,000 with the 5-pointed star insignia embossed. This set would be the last $1 commemorative coin minted in bullion gold until 1983 after the US Congress resumed authorizing the minting of commemorative coins.

In 1926, the third and last $2.5 US commemorative coin minted in bullion gold was issued to celebrate the country’s Sesquicentennial independence with 46,019 coins minted and sold to avid collectors. There were also 141,120 half-dollar commemorative silver coins issued for the occasion. This would be the last commemorative coin struck in bullion gold until 1983.

Other Pre-Modern 20th Century Commemorative Coins

Between 1918 and 1938, there have been numerous commemorative coins issued but except for the $2.5 gold sesquicentennial coin issued in 1926, all subsequent commemorative tenders have been in half-dollar or 50-cent denomination minted in bullion silver.

There were no more bullion gold coins minted during this period. Apart from the San Diego California Pacific Exposition which was commemorated with roughly 100,000 half-dollar silver coins minted in 1935, the Cincinnati Music Center establishment with 5000 silver half-dollar coins in 1936 and the Cleve/Great Lakes Exposition with 50,000 coins in the same year, most commemorative coins minted during the period were meant to celebrate memorials, bicentennials, centennials, sesquicentennials and tercentenaries. One commemorative coin celebrated Daniel Boone’s bicentennial in 1934.

Starting with the Lincoln and Illinois Centennial in 1918 with slightly over 100,000 half-dollar coins minted, the commemorative memorial coins issued subsequently in the same 50-cent include the following:

1920: Maine Centennial with 50,028 coins minted and issued; the Pilgrim Tercentenary with 152,112 coins issued. The following year saw another 20,052 Pilgrim Tercentenary coins issued.
1921: Missouri Centennial with slightly more than 20,000 issued; the Alabama Centennial with roughly 68,000 coins minted
1922: Grant Memorial with 67,405 issues and another 4,256 with the star insignia embossed.
1923: Monroe Doctrine Centennial with 274,077 issued;
1924: Huguenot/Walloon Tercentenary with 142,080 coins minted;
1925: Lexington and Concord Sesquicentennial with 182,013 minted; Stone Mountain Memorial with 1,314,709 minted: California Diamond Jubilee with 86,594 minted and the Fort Vancouver Centennial with 14,884 minted;
1926: Sesquicentennial of the US Independence with 141,120 issued and the Oregon Trail Memorial which started with 47,955 coins minted and subsequently issued in the years, 1928, and 1933 to 1939;
1927: Vermont Sesquicentennial with 28,162 coins minted;
1928: Hawaiian Sesquicentennial with 10,009 issued plus 50 coin proofs;
1934: Daniel Boone bicentennial starting with 10,007 coins issued and re-issued in subsequent years until 1938;
1935: Connecticut Tercentenary with 25,018 coins issued; Arkansas Centennial starting with 13,012 coins and produced until 1939, the old Spanish Trail with 10,008 coins issued and the Houston New York Sesquicentennial with 10,008 coins minted;
1936: Arkansas-Robinson with 25,265 coins issued; the Rhode Island Tercentenary with 20,013 coins; the Wisconsin Territorial Centennial with 25,015 coins’ the Long Island Tercentenary with 81,826 coins; the York County, Maine Tercentenary with 25,015 coins, Bridgeport, Connecticut Centennial with 25,015 coins; Lynchburg, Virginia Sesquicentennial with 20,013 coins, Elgin Centennial with 20,015 coins; the Albany, New York Charter with 25,013 coins; the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge with 71,424; Columbia, South Carolina Sesquicentennial with initial 9,007 coins minted; the Delaware Tercentenary with 20,993 coins, the Battle of Gettysburg with 26,928 coins and the Norfolk, Virginia Bicentennial with 16,936 coins;

1937: Roanoke Island, North Carolina with 29,030 coins minted and the Battle of Antietam with 18,028 coins;
1938: New Rochelle, New York with 15,266 coins.

It is plain that just about every state wants to mark its centennials with commemorative coins and that’s understandable. The US Congress has been flooded with pending legislation to get these commemorative coins minted. It is not surprising that by 1939, the US Congress has had enough and promptly put a halt to all commemorative coinage.

It would take another 43 years, almost half a century, for the US Congress to resume authorizing the minting of commemorative coins.

US Congress Halts Issuance of Commemorative Coins

In 1939, the US Congress passed the Public Law No. 278 of the 76th Congress which, as approved in August 5, 1939, prohibited "...the issuance and coinage of certain commemorative coins..." It effectively put an end to the minting and issuance of all commemorative coins even those already approved by that time.

To be sure, there were exceptions made with Exception of Acts signed into law on August 7, 1946 when 50-cent commemorative coins where authorized for minting to celebrate the Iowa Centennial and Booker T. Washington. An amendment to the prohibition was likewise signed in 1951 for the George Washington Carver-Booker T. Washington memorial 50-cent coins.

Minted from 1951 to 1954, the Carver-Washington 50-cent coins were the last commemorative coins for the pre-modern era. After this, the next official commemorative coin would be minted in 1982 for the 250th birth anniversary of George Washington.

Part of practice of issuing commemorative coins is the issuance of coin proofs or early samples of the coins which are minted to regularly check the dies used in subsequent minting of the coins themselves. This is also done for circulated monetized coins and if they are issued to the public can command collector’s item prices in the market after a few years.

These coin proofs are valued for their sharper coin designs and rims as well as smoother mirror-finished blank areas. Coin proofs form a special category of uncirculated mint coins that are often sold at a premium to coin collectors. Not all coins in circulation have been issued with coin proofs at the start but it is not uncommon for the US government to issue a set containing samples of each coin in circulated in coin-proof grade quality.

The US Mint strikes coin proofs such as Prestige Proofs of commemorative coins sold at a higher premium between the years 1983 and 1997. The issuance of proofs resumed in 2005 and they are now called Legacy Proofs that come in sets of a dollars, quarters and cents. In 2009, a proof set was issued containing 18 coins marking the Lincoln Bicentennial.

Starting in 1992, coin proofs for legal tender coins were issued in silver and other base metals. But US commemorative coin proofs are issued in bullion platinum, gold and silver. Bullion represents the highest purity of 99.999%. A bullion gold coin is essentially a 24 kt gold in jewelry terms and carries the highest market value.

The news most US Gold Coin collectors have been waiting for has finally broke out. The US Mint have announced that they are on course to offer the 2010 Proof Gold Eagle coins and the release date of the sought after coin collection is on October 7 2010. The history of the Proof Gold Eagle Coins came well back in 1986 when the United States started to strike gold and silver bullion coins. Their main intention was to compete with the Canadian Maple Leaf and the other gold coins collection and made the gold coins’ value tied to the value of the market directly.

Although the sale of the Proof Gold Eagles Coins was canceled in 2009, the recent bullion sales declination and the discontinuation of the Gold and Silver Eagle allotment has paved a clear path for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles Coins to continue its resurrection in the Gold Coins Collection market in the United States. Furthermore, the Gold and Silver Eagle Coins’ collectors’ version were not produced due to their illegal mandate state.

The demands of the gold bullion coins in the United States market were huge thus making the US Mint to play catch up. With works being done to satisfy the demand of the market, the US Mint first offered the 2010 Gold Buffalo bullion gold coins in April and followed up the release with the proof version of the same coins.

Nonetheless, the demand for the Gold Eagles Coins never subsided hence the release announcement of the highly anticipated 2010 Proof Gold Eagles coins which will be made in October 2010. Prior to the official launching of the Proof Gold Eagles Coins, the US Mint struck a cameo version of the coin multiple times, a special image made especially for avid coins collectors. The packaging of the Gold Eagles coins add to the special feel of the coins where each coin is placed in sealed capsule, in a beautifully decorated satin-lined velvet case.

The wonderfully packaged gold coins are struck in 22-karat gold with the obverse side design features an olive branch and torch-holding Liberty, a design made famous by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in his previous works. The design on the reverse side of the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles Coins is sculpted with an eagle carrying an olive branch just above a female eagle and its hatchlings in a nest.

The 2010 Proof Gold Eagles Coins were produced with a variety of ranges including the 1 oz, ½ oz, 1/4 oz and the 1/10 oz gold coins mintages. Each of the mintages are sold separately and limited in numbers. In order to make the Proof Eagles Gold Coins equally accessible by the public, the US Mint will not attend to any bookings and orders made before the official launching of the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles Coins on October 7 2010 at noon ET. All price range will only be revealed a week before the official release of the Gold Eagles Coins.

The 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof Coin was released as a 1 oz proof coin in December 3 of the stated year when the orders started to be accepted by the United States Mint. With the orders limited to 5 units of coins per household, by December 6, the US Mint received over 7,000 coins with the overall total of mintage coins were only limited to 8,000. The US Mint also announced that all orders were to be made on the time of the release and no pre-orders will be entertained as to make it fair to all collectors to have fair and equal chance of obtaining the coin.

The 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof Coin was initially sold at $1,792. During that time the average platinum an ounce value was from $1,450 to $1,549.99. Although Platinum coins were not the main highlight for the true collectors, many believed the main contributor to the fast sell out was due to the lack of coins offered earlier in the year. Most of the collectible coins were released on the next calendar year which is in 2010.

Nonetheless, the 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof Coin featured the first new design on its reverse side in the multi-year series where the side was engraved with an inscription of “A More Perfect Union” that personified the American democracy spirit that can be found in the Preamble to the United States Constitution. The portrait and was decided on the Citizen Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) recommendations to the Secretary of Treasury.

The uniqueness of theme on the reverse of the coin, featuring the representation of people from the four major races in the United States engraved on the side. The design was done by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Memphill. The portrait on reverse side of the 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof is surrounded by the inscriptions of the wording “United States of America” and the fineness platinum comprising “1 oz .9999 Platinum” and with a face value of “$100”.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof’s obverse side was sculpted with the head of the Statue of Liberty ‘looking towards the future’ which was designed by John Mercanti, who was the United States Mint Chief Engraver. There were also inscriptions of the year of the mintage “2009” as well as the infamous slogan used for most of the collectors’ coins of the United States which is “In God We Trust”.

The 2009 Platinum Eagle Proof coins are minted annually with four different denominations and sizes in specification. The specifications include a 1 oz Platinum with 32.7mm in diameter and a face value of $100, ½ oz Platinum, 27mm in diameter and $50 face value; ¼ oz Platinum, 22mm diameter and $25 face value as well as the 1/10 oz Platinum with 16.5mm diameter and a $10 face value. The price of the Platinum Eagle Proof differed each week as the price is determined by the average of the platinum’s price in London Fix.

The 24-karat 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins were released on Thursday April 29, 2010, and was the 6th edition of the American Buffalo Gold Coins series after the series was officially authorized by the Public Law 109-145 on December 22, 2005. The bill was also famously known as the Presidential 41 Coin Act. The 2010 edition gold coins were offered by the United States Mint with the face value of $50.

During the first day of the 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins release, the United States Mint stated that a record of 48,500 were successfully sold to the public who are mostly lifelong fans of the United States Mint collector coins. However, since the release of the Bullion Buffalo coins, the United States Mint put a halt to selling the coins directly to the public and began to hire “Authorized Purchasers” or the AP in order for the coins to be distributed on a larger scale.

The first day total of 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins sales of 48,500 coins represented around 24.3% of the 2009 edition of the same coins last year. However, on Friday during the second day release of the coins, another 8,000 coins were purchased which set a new record for most gold coins to be sold annually at a total of 56,500 coins.

This means that the demands of the American Buffalo Gold Coins are still very high despite the news of the depletion and suspension by the United States Mint regarding the bullion state of affairs. Nonetheless, the 2010 American Buffalo Gold coins were sold out and will be made available or re-struck again for the market.

The design of the 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins is still the same as the previous successors. The reverse side of the coin features the American buffalo or bison, who many believed to be modelled by “Black Diamond”, a buffalo that lived in the New York City Zoo. However, the statement has never been confirmed by the United States Mint. Other designs on the reverse side include the inscription of “United States of America”, “e Pluribus Unum”, In God We Trust”, face value of “$50” and the “1/2 oz .9999 Pure Gold”.

The obverse side still features the engraving of the Indian Chief portrait, inscriptions of “Liberty”, and “2010” as the mint mark. The original design of the 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins was first sported on the famous Buffalo Nickel that was circulated until 1938. According to the recent price of gold, the 2010 American Buffalo Gold Coins were said to be sold between $1,595 and $1,699. After the selling out of the last coins, the United States Mint then decided to come out with the proof version of the same coins to satisfy the market’s need of the infamous American Buffalo Gold Coins series.

The 2010 American Silver Eagle is the latest addition to the official American Silver Eagle Bullion of the United States series. The first series of the silver bullion coin was released in November 1986, authorized by the Title II of Public Law 99-61 under the Liberty Coin Act which was approved in July 1985. The 2010 American Silver Eagle was then released in January 19, 2010, and able to met the United States Mint’s public demand for the silver bullion coins.

During the previous American Silver Eagles releases, the coins were made available for ordering in the months of November or December before the turn of a new year but the 2010 series were only released in mid January. The reason for the delayed production is because the United States Mint closed up production of the 2009 American Silver Eagle to the very last minute of 2009, pushing the production date of the 2010 American Silver Eagle to a later date. Should the delay had not taken place, the purchasers and collectors could put in their orders in December 2009 and received the 2010 series in January the following year.

The 2010 American Silver Eagle is struck on a one-troy ounce size of a 99.9% pure silver coin. The coin has a nominal face value of one dollar and the content, weight and purity of the silver bullion coins was certified by the United States Mint. The 2010 American Silver Eagle coins were also struck in two versions which are the proof and the uncirculated versions after the release of its silver bullion version.

The design of the American Silver Eagle has been maintained since its first inception in 1986 which features the “Walking Liberty” engraved on the obverse side of the coin. The design, which was first used on the 1916-1947 U.S. half dollar coin, was sculpted by an American sculptor named Adolph A. Weinman. Other engravings include the inscriptions of “Liberty”, “In God We Trust” and “2010” as the year of minting issuance.

The reverse side of the coin features the portrait of a heraldic eagle placed behind a shield which was designed by John Mercanti, a Sculptor-Engraver of the United States Mint. The eagle grasps an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in the left talon, similar to the Great Seal of the United States. Its beak holds a cloth with the phrase “E Pluribus Unum”. On top of the eagle’s head are thirteen five-point stars that represent the US Thirteen Colonies. Other inscriptions on the reverse side include “United States of America”, “1 oz Fine Silver~One Dollar”, and the mint mark just below the eagle.

The news of gold price at its all time high was met with thunderous claps by investors and the global markets alike in the current state of the global economy.
